Kakira Cane Spirits. True African Spirit
Founded in 1930, Kakira is East Africa’s biggest sugar brand and last year it launched Kakira Cane Spirits in the UK, two years after its debut in Uganda, Kenya and the USA.
Since then, Kakira has become Africa’s most awarded spirits brand with a plethora of gold medals and trophies from IWSC, ISC, San Francisco and London Spirits Competition, amongst others.
All Kakira cane spirits are 100% ‘grass to glass’, meaning that all the steps of the making of Kakira spirits are ‘in house’ from the growing and harvesting of the sugar cane to the skilful distillation, blending and aging of the spirits.
All Kakira rums are made from their own estate produced molasses and are copper pot distilled before being aged in the barrel house, some 16 miles north of the Equator.
The Kakira aged rums undergo a minimum cask maturation of 5 years on the Equator and are meticulously blended from Bourbon and Sherry cask soleras and single fill casks.
The final blends are then cut with water from a private feed on the shores Lake Victoria in Uganda at the source of the River Nile before being bottled on site.
The entire estate and process is powered by renewable energy produced from Kakira’s waste sugar cane fibre, making the whole estate carbon negative and climate positive!
Moreover, Kakira provides over 4,500 employees and their families with housing, including free electricity, water, healthcare from Kakira’s own 75 bed hospital and education from 15 company primary schools and 1 company secondary school.
There are few genuinely African spirits that can compete in scale, quality, provenance, ethos and sustainability. Kakira is more than brand or a corporation, it is a whole community, which is why Kakira represents True African Spirit.
